"Us" is my husband and myself. We have three children, an absolutely awesome, wonderful and beautiful daughter-in-law who is now pregnant with our FIFTH grandchild, an equally amazing and supportive son-in-law, and four truly awesome grandchildren and consider ourselves blessed indeed. I had a patient once who told me everything seemed to be "awesome" in my life - intimating that I used the phrase a little too often, but it's just true, so I've added "amazing" to my vocabulary. I do the creating and he who has a highly discriminatory sense of smell lets me know when it is outrageously "smelly" or "feels too greasy". He allows me to try out my products on him and he continues to be supportive even when he sees me spending ridiculous amounts of money for carrier oils, butters, essential oils, fragrance oils, candle wax, as well as bottles and jars. He even continues to be supportive when he sees my nose stuck in front of my computer hours on end trying to finish this web site and is my most helpful critic when trying to design pages that are appealing, interesting and functional. Which is, of course, why it is about US and not just me.

We evolved from my frustration over two things in particular:

1. From the time I became a teenager until I began to make my own creams, I have had extremely dry and sensitive skin. As an adult, a doctor finally gave my problems a name - rosacea. I was constantly fighting breakouts, with dry flaky skin that required having lots of gooey greasy stuff on it all the time just to be comfortable. I tried every product that came on the market - all of the most expensive ones and the drug store brands. I learned to ask if it was returnable if I didn't like it and, unfortunately, have a closet full of those I didn't return but couldn't continue to use. I resorted to simply wearing lots of makeup, which I found uncomfortable and frankly made the health of my skin even worse - but it covered it up! It would take me a long time to even put on my makeup because I had to try to make the flaky places not look flaky and the spotty places not look spotty. I worked in the dry environment of a hospital with 12+ hour shifts. By the end of the day, my skin would be so tight and dry that I was miserable and usually found myself putting something - anything on my face, usually it was my lip balm. My daughter, unfortunately, has inherited some of this from me and has had eczema since she was a young child. For her, we had resorted to dermatologists and steroid creams - which worked only some of the time. My husband on the other hand, has had some sort of "fungus" type spots on his arms from being in the sun for so many years.

The Answer

So in my desperation (why do we have to be so desperate before we begin to pray about things!), I simply prayed and asked if He couldn't help me find the solution. Over the next few months I began to read about essential oils and aromatherapy and the healing effects, both mentally and physically, from these natural products. My interest became almost an obsession to find out all I could about how these work, reading book after book (again my husband being supportive as I bought out Barnes & Noble every time we went there). While reading volumes of information on the different essential oils and checking out way too many websites, I began to see things like mango butter, shea butter, avocado oil, evening primrose oil, etc. mentioned as well. There in black & white (well sometimes color) I was finding out how healing and regenerative these products are. This really got me interested. Our exercise room became my "lab" as my husband calls it. I began to experiment - using friends and family as guinea pigs. Then I got excited as I began to develop some creams that actually made a tangible difference. They felt great on my face and kept my skin soft and comfortable for hours at work. I quickly began to see changes in my skin and truly couldn't believe how much better it looked. Then the most surprising thing, for me anyway, was that my skin no longer had breakouts! I actually didn't need any makeup - well except for eye makeup and some lipstick. I wasn't trying to cover up anything anymore. The wrinkles around my eyes plumped up and are not as noticeable . I'd even say some of them have gone away, but I think I'm not supposed to make any of those kind of promises. I wish I had a close-up before and after picture. My husband had taken a picture of me one morning when my face was just a mess of spots. I deleted it of course. Now I wish I could show you the difference these creams have made. And then I began to find research on how harmful are the products we find on the shelves today and that we all use. Most of the products for women, men and even babies contain mineral oil. I frankly had no idea that mineral oil was listed as a "known carcinogen" in the National Toxicology Program. Now take a look at the ingredients in most of your creams and lotions - that's what baby oil is! One of my best resources for this information has been a book entitled Product Of Misinformation by Michael Rutledge, a cosmetic chemist who actually formulates products for the public. There are other books out there but he has no hidden agenda and isn't trying to sell you anything. He became outraged at all of the misinformation and lack of control over cosmetics and wrote this very informative book. Then I began to discover how harmful are some of the preservatives put in these products. I've also discovered that preservatives are necessary to avoid harmful mold and fungus, but there are preservatives out there that aren't harmful. Here is our skin - our largest organ - and we are slathering these harmful products on ourselves, our children and our babies! I did. I always had large tubes and bottles of what I thought were quite nice smelling and emollient creams from one of my favorites (used to be) places to shop. I'd always take advantage of their "buy three and get the fourth free" and my daughter and I would stock up with our latest favorite scent. Then I discovered that any benefit from any actually good ingredient was not even getting into the layers of my skin because the molecules were too large to carry it into the skin or the actual amount of the "good" ingredient was far to small to be of benefit.

Our Motivation

I guess I've gone on and on about this, but it has become very important to me that we women (and men) begin to take charge of our destinies and our families' destinies by using natural, healing, nurturing and truly beneficial products on our skin. My goal now (although not entirely altruistic) is to make these discoveries of mine available to you and your family. I know once you try these products you will want more. I've watched those friends and family to whom I've given samples ask for more. Nurses in particular have a difficult time keeping their hands from becoming cracked and even bleeding due to washing them so many times a day. Our creams can help that. You need to try them yourself!
