Bay Rum Essential Oil (Pimenta racemosa)

Current and past literature attributes the following properties to this essential oil:

Antibacterial/antiseptic: Research abstract from Science Direct.

Central Nervous System: Reported in the literature to be analgesic, anti-convulsant, anti-neuralgic, anti-rheumatic, a stimulant, and can bring about euphoria. It is also reported to be uplifting to one’s mood. We use this in our men's line in our "Classic Bay Rum" natural fragrance. This fragrance is just a magnet for women! It has been for years and continues to be "THE" classic "man" fragrance and for all ages.

Circulation/Musculoskeletal: Eugenol, one of the major constituents of this oil, is a powerful inhibitor of platelet activity. Because of this, Bay Rum should be used cautiously with anyone taking anticoagulant drugs such as aspirin, heparin or Coumadin. It does reportedly help circulation, is comforting to sprains and nerve pain, see our "Spicey Muscle Oil". We have a large group of testimonials, including our own, on how well this blend works for muscle/bone/nerve pain.

Respiratory: A good expectorant, good for colds, flu’s, infectious diseases and bronchitis; however, I like to add that we prefer to use other oils for respiratory complaints. See safety/cautions. There are so many essential oils that are extremely effective for respiratory issues, we think others work better for this particular issue. Can be an immune enhancer, however, particularly effective for colds and flu.

Skin/Dermatological: Reported to be antiseptic, a great tonic for hair and a scalp stimulant that increases hair growth and clears dandruff, see our Borage Hot Oil Hair Treatment

Safety/Cautions:  Bay Rum should be used in moderation due to the high levels of eugenol content, as mentioned above, and can be a mucous membrane irritant. We repeat, use caution if taking any anticoagulant drugs such as aspirin, heparin or Coumadin. If using for personal care products please use caution and test the blend prior to use. We have found that this oil has many beneficial properties other than how good it smells - which originally was all that we used it for until we began to discover the other practical uses. The familiar aroma of what we call "Classic Bay Rum" is a favorite for many. Bay Rum should never be taken orally.
