September 2008

Well, as I sit here - 9 days late getting this onto the website - it was 44 degrees this morning! It's now a beautiful, sunny 65 degrees outside. I so much love the changing of the seasons and September is one of my favorite months - we're still bringing in our bountiful (well...not so bountiful this year as we fight a tomato virus) produce, the flowers are looking less wilted since we've had rain a couple of times this past week, and the air has just a hint of the smell of fall. Now you ask - what is that smell? How would you describe it? The leaves haven't actually started turning yet. Our black walnut trees are usually the first to lose their leaves and the last to get their leaves in the spring and they do, in fact, have some yellow leaves on them. It's time to get out our ubiquitous chiminea for evening time on the deck. I love watching the squirrels as they carry the huge green walnuts in their mouths as they scurry along the wires and branches of our trees.

Our two youngest granddaughters have been here for a few days. Very, very special times, but I have to admit I'm worn out! Grandkids are definitely a blessing from the Lord. While they were here and I was thinking about what to put on special for August, it occurred to me how often we used the Bugz Off!. When they both came last Monday (today is Friday), they each had quite a few mosquito bites on them and our 7-year old granddaughter is going to be like her Mom was, and has some sort of reaction to mosquito bites that results in large, inflamed areas surrounding each bite. We have so many mosquitoes this year, undoubtedly due to the wet spring and, of course, West Nile Virus is a real concern. We needed to spray each of us completely before even going out on the deck, but it worked. We used our lavender essential oil (Lavender Super) on the mosquito bites they came with and it also worked to heal them quickly and stop the itching. So - we're putting on special (again) our Bugz Off! in any size (check out our backpacking size.) I recommend the 8 oz size for camping though, because you'll use a lot of it. We also use it on Abby, our special getting older golden retriever/Irish setter mix, who for the first time ever has fleas. We don't usually have a problem with fleas - I think due to our large black walnut trees. But, this year she has been having some, so we just keep her sprayed with the Bugz Off! and it keeps the flies and the fleas off of her, plus she smells better. We're a little late getting up this month's special - sorry about that. We did have a truly amazing 4th of July. Our two youngest granddaughters were here for a few days (no words for how special that is!) and then we had friends and family staying with us over the weekend. The weather was, as my husband said, the best he's remembered for a long time for a 4th of July. EVERYONE all over Lincoln had fireworks! We could look in any direction just sitting on our front porch and watch an amazing display. It just gave us goose bumps because we decided everyone just needs to demonstrate in some way how much they love the good old USA. I've never seen so many fireworks - ever.

IT finally arrived - spring that is, late, but welcomed. I'd say we're into summer now with temperatures in the 80's to 90's. I know for some of you folks that sounds pretty good and I agree. I love Nebraska summers because you can actually get outside and play. When I lived in Tennessee and Mississippi, as much as I love the south, the summers were difficult for someone who likes to be outside all the time - that'd be me. Well, now that you know how the weather is, I bet you'd like to see what we're offering on special this month. We've taken a vote and have chosen the Alpha Hydroxy Acid Cleanser. Why? It occurred to a few of us that summer time requires a little extra cleansing and your face needs a different routine than the winter months. April & May 2008

Well...it's NOT spring here yet in Nebraska and it seems to be taking a very long time to get here. It's spitting snow outside right now and any thoughts of planting our garden are somewhat in the future it seems. We had one day a few weeks ago - in the 70's - a beautiful Saturday afternoon. My husband and I decided it was time to drag the kayaks out and go to the nearest lake and do a little kayaking. You would think that as we slipped over slabs of ice in our back yard, we might have had a clue, but we just packed up the kayaks and drove on over to the lake. We were somewhat dismayed and very abashed that the lake was still completely frozen over. Lots of people were walking and bicycling, but there would be no kayaking that day. I'm sure everyone who saw us got a good laugh out of that one. It is, however, not frozen any more, but it's been way too cold to think about kayaking.

Oh - about our specials for the month. I'm a little late in getting them up, but here is what we've decided on:

1. We are offering our NEW, ORGANIC, PARABEN-FREE hand & body lotion (really more of a cream) on sale for $12.00. Yes - I know our previous lotion was $12.00, but it was not paraben-free and it contained NO organic ingredients, nor was it nearly as thick and emollient as our new creation. This lotion will sell for $15.00 unscented, with aromatherapy fragrances now available (real, true essential oil blends). I have to say I am very excited with the way this cream has turned out. It absorbs quickly but leaves your skin feeling soft and satisfied. For years (which is one of the reasons I even started making creams & lotions) nothing would keep my hands moisturized. I'd have to carry the bottle with me everywhere - in the car, on my kitchen cabinets, in my pocket - because I had to keep reapplying it. Not so with this lotion. We had excellent responses to our questionnaires that we handed out with samples with a very large percentage of those asked replying they would buy our lotion on a regular basis instead of their previous favorite.

Our other special for the month of March is a free 2 oz sample size (unscented or lavender) of our new lotion with any order over $30.00.

November & December 2007

Ah - the new website is still in progress and behind the scenes, Ann is diligently, passionately, meticulously completing the research and blending for the essential oil blends that will be offered on the new website. New products, new ideas and new blends - exciting stuff.

AUGUST & SEPTEMBER 2007

As I re-read my note about spring in Nebraska, the temperature on our deck reads 98 degrees and the humidity must be somewhere around 200%! It feels like I remember Tennessee & Mississippi felt many years ago when I lived there. My purple coneflowers have decided even they are tired, looking drab and they are normally a perfect flower for Nebraska in August. Since I wasn't feeling summery or "flowery", I decided to put on special a new blend I came up with accidentally - which is usually how my best blends arrive on the scene. My husband is fond of Tabu - if any of you are close to my age you will remember this popular fragrance. I, myself, was never a great fan of this fragrance, never wore it and preferred lighter, fresher scents. But I decided to try to duplicate this for my husband and came up with something that resembles Tabu mixed with Patchouli and some honeysuckle (other stuff too, but that's my secret and if I told you I'd have to - well you know how it goes.) Hard to imagine I'm guessing, but I really like it. The first note leaves you wondering, but then it softens to a really nice, warm, happy and secure fragrance. Now you're asking yourself - what does that mean?! I agree, when attempting to describe fragrances, it is difficult and totally subjective. Let me just say - I like it a lot and think you will too.

SPRING 2007

March in Nebraska began with temperatures in the 60's and 70's and we all began to think SPRING!!! However, if you know anything about weather in Nebraska, you knew better. We quickly had over a foot of snow on our back deck and in our yard. My husband and I wandered down the bike trail behind our house that night around 11:00 pm. It was almost like daylight because the reflection of lights on the snow brightened the night. A magical, mystical beautiful sight with the tree branches coated with snow, but I have to admit I'm more than ready for spring and the wonderful fragrances that come with that season. Our yard is now covered with new blooms and the wonderful sense of satisfaction with seeing plants long ago placed into the ground coming back each year to give us pleasure. Fragrance is a pleasure and we've added some new fragrances to our already long list, as well as quite a few new men's fragrances.

My house through November was a Pumpkin Spice house and then I switched to Cranberry Fig. I have to admit, I often had the Citrus Peel & Pine burning along with the Cranberry Fig and I could almost convince myself that winter in Nebraska really isn't all that bad!! Now spring is here and there are just too many choices! I have my gardens full of fresh flowers, but I still love to have a candle burning at night especially while reading in bed.
