Apricot Kernel Oil
(Prunus armeniaca) Apricot kernel oil comes from the large pits of apricots that yield up to 45% oil. The apricot tree is cultivated throughout the Northern Hemisphere. Apricot kernel oil has 30% unsaturated essential fatty acid content. The oil is similar in weight to human sebum. Extremely nourishing to the skin and excellent around the eyes and neck. Apricot kernel oil is an emollient. According to the AMA's committee on Cutaneous Health apricot kernel oil does help make the skin feel softer and smoother, reduce roughness, cracking and irritation, and may possibly retard the fine wrinkles of aging.

Sweet Almond Oil
Almond, Sweet (Prunus amygdalus) Sweet almond oil is pressed from almond kernels. The almond tree is cultivated in Southern Europe, the Mediterranean countries and California. Sweet Almond oil is high in mono and polyunsaturated fatty acids and Vitamins A, B1,B2,B6 and Vitamin E.  It consists mainly of oleic acid (69%), essential unsaturated fatty acids (25%), sterolins (.5 to 1%) and vitamin E (about 10 IU per ounce.) A light nearly odorless oil. Sweet almond oil is said to have great nutritional value for all skin types. Has a similar make up to baby’s sebum, the oil naturally produced by the skin to protect it and is easily absorbed. Contain glucosides, minerals, and vitamins and is rich in protein. It was highly valued by the Egyptians for cosmetic purposes.  It acts as an emollient, and will soften, soothe and re-condition dried out winter skin or over-sunned summer skin. It will also relieve the itching that comes with dried skin.

Avocado Oil
Avocado (Persea americana)  oil is made from the pulp of the avocado fruit. It is a rich, heavy but penetrating oil that is full of nutritive and therapeutic components. Avocado oil contains more than 20 % essential unsaturated fatty acids. It contains vitamins A, C, D and E, proteins, beta-carotene, lecithin, fatty acids and the "youth mineral" potassium. Avocado oil is high in unsaponifiables (sterolins) which are reputed to be beneficial in reducing age spots, healing scars and moisturizing the upper layers of the skin.  They soften the skin, have superior moisturizing effect on the upper layer of the skin and reduce scars. The sterolins in avocado oil have been found to diminish age spots. (Return to top of page)

A 1991 study at the Department of Food Engineering and Biotechnology, Technion-Israel Institute of Technology found that treatment with avocado oil significantly increases the water soluble collagen content in the dermis, which effects the age of the skin. Avocado is used in many folk medicines as an aphrodisiac. It is an excellent emollient. According to the AMA's committee on Cutaneous Health it does help make the skin feel softer and smoother, reduce roughness, cracking and irritation. And may possibly retard the fine wrinkles of aging. Said to help protect the skin from ultraviolet rays. This ultra rich oil is highly prized to those with skin problems such as eczema, psoriasis and rosacea.  It is recommended to those with sensitive skin, problem skin or other irritations that require a vitamin rich oil.

Babassu Oil.

Babassu oil comes from the seeds of the babassu tree. The babassu tree is a palm tree that stands approximately 20 meters tall. It is native to Brazil in South American. It grows widely in Brazil and is considered a major industrial and economical resource for the region.

Babassu oil comes from from the kernels of the Babassu palm and is a non-drying oil    It is high in lauric and myristic acids. These acids have melting points that are close to the human body temperature so, when applied, babassu oil draws the heat from the skin to initiate melting.  Therefore, the transfer of the heat creates a cooling sensation on the skin.  Babassu oil also forms a protective, soothing coat when applied to the skin as well as a pleasant, smooth feeling.

Babassu oil is considered to be a superior emollient that is beneficial for either dry or oily complexions. It gently moisturizes the skin without leaving an oily sheen.

Babassu oil contains about 70% lipids. It is cold pressed from the kernel and is produced without chemicals. The fruit of the babassu is used in products such as drugs , cosmetics, and beverages.  The oil from the seeds is commonly used for cooking and in making soap. The babassu tree's leaves are even used to provide thatch for houses as wells as woven mats for the construction walls for homes and other uses.  The lumber is used for timbers.

For all these reasons and more, the babassu tree is major industrial, economical and human resource for the region as well as being the source of babassu oil known for it's healing properties throughout the world.

Borage Oil
Borage (Borago officinalis) Obtained from the seed of Borago officinalis, which grows abundantly in the Mediterranean region, Central Europe and Asia. Has an extremely high gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) content. GLA is vital for the synthesis of prostaglandin an important function in the body, especially the skin. Borage oil also has the highest known content of essential unsaturated fatty acids. These are great skin conditioners. They regulate the hydration of the skin and are humectants.

Calendula Infused Oil (infused with organic extra virgin olive oil)
An infused oil containing the active ingredients of the marigold flower and is sometimes referred to as Marigold oil. It is has been traditionally used for skin care in the Mediterranean regions to help preserve skin freshness, protect skin from over drying, and to help reduce sun-induced wrinkles and sun caused aging during summer time. The anti-aging properties of Calendula oil, known to ancient Egyptians, may be related to the high content and diversity of carotenes, phytosterols, polyphenols and EFAs.

We infuse our own now using organic extra virgin olive oil and infuse it at very low temperatures over 2 weeks in order to extract as much as we can of the beneficial properties of this healing oil.

Uses - Calendula oil is good for all skin types, and is considered valuable for treating skin damage such as wounds, scars, burns, inflammation and other injuries as it is said to be an effective aid in tissue regeneration. It has anti- inflammatory, anti-spasmodic qualities and particularily blends well with Hypericum (St. John's Wort). It is best when infused in a light textured oil such as almond or sunflower. Calendula is a tonic, soothing, restorative oil, good for any type of skin, but especially suitable for dry and/or aging skin. When used regularly this product will impart a deep olive shine to the skin, and helps protect the skin from age related thinning and drying out. It is magical in its ability to prevent tearing, soothe pain, stop bleeding, promote rapid healing, and prevent scarring. Calendula lotion will not cause the irritation common to conventional antiseptics. Do not however, use the tincture undiluted on an open wound as the alcohol base will burn the raw tissue. Used externally, Calendula is one of the best herbs for treating burns, scalds, cuts, abrasions, and infections because of its antiseptic qualities, improving blood flow to the affected area.

Cautions - No Known toxicity, considered safe in normal applications. There are no known drug interactions with Calendula, although occasional interactions may occur in cases of allergic reaction.

Cranberry Seed Oil
Is an essential fatty acid oil and  the only available oil with a one to one ratio of Omega 6 (linoleic) to Omega 3 (alpha-linolenic) fatty acids. Cranberry seed oil has oxidative stability and contains 70% essential fatty acids making it a superb emollient, lubricant and conditioner for the skin. It is excellent for use in skin, hair, lip and baby care. Cranberry seed oil contributes to the lipid barrier protection of the skin and assists in moisture retention.

Emu Oil
This is the "miracle oil" that has been used in skin care for centuries, and the cosmetics industry is finally catching on to it!  Studies show that Emu oil used in skin care products can have these benefits:

Anti-inflammatory
Non-irritating to the skin
Highly penetrating and well absorbed into the skin
Beneficial effects on wounds, such as burns

Emu oil is rapidly gaining recognition as an invaluable cosmetic ingredient. Current studies attribute very promising benefits to Emu oil. It has been reported to have an extraordinary ability to penetrate the skin. Emu oil seems to act as a carrier for carrying other ingredients. It is non-comedogenic, and is completely non irritating. It has been suggested that emu oil can reduce inflammation and redness of the skin, reduce the formation of wrinkles and restore moisture to irritated, dry skin. In addition, it is said to reduce inflammation and pain of sore muscles and joints. It may therefore, be helpful with conditions such as arthritis. It has been recommended for use in healing burns and preventing the formation of scar tissue while encouraging rapid repair of damaged tissue. It should be a “must have” item for the medicine cabinet. A blend of emu oil, water and lavender essential oil in a spray bottle seems to rapidly heal wounds, burns, stitches, and even hot spots in dogs. Used in soap at 10-20%, emu oil will make a hard bar with stable, moisturizing lather. Use emu oil in essential oil blends to help deliver the oils into the skin. Use Emu oil in massage or sports blends to help relieve soreness and inflammation. Emu oil becomes creamy looking at 65° F and will solidify if kept colder. Refrigeration is recommended if you plan to store emu oil for longer than 3 months. The uses and benefits of this oil are endless and certainly deserve more space than can be afforded here. In short, studies have suggested that emu oil is anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, encourages healing, stimulates skin, hair and nail growth, has a natural SPF, is a natural emollient and moisturizer, penetrates multiple layers of skin, is non-comedogenic, hypo-allergenic, prevents and diminishes scarring/stretch marks and more. It may also prove to be a great oil to use for skin disorders and allergies.

Our fully refined emu oil is sourced only from US domestic farm raised emu, and supports sustainable alternative agriculture for the preservation of family farming. Our Emu oil is refined using a natural process. No solvents or chemicals have been used, and the integrity of the oil and its bioactive properties have not been compromised in any way. 1% of natural tocopherol (Vitamin E) has been added to our emu oil in order to provide a stable oil for use in cosmetics. During the refinement process, the oil is sterilized, bleached and deodorized using natural silica clays and vacuum steam pressure. We, therefore, are able to supply the highest quality emu oil with stable shelf life without having lost any of its properties through harsh chemical/heat refinement procedures.

Emu oil contains approximately 70 % unsaturated fatty acids. It is 40% oleic acid, which is mono- unsaturated.  Emu oil also contains both of the two essential fatty acids (EFA's) which are important to human health: 20 % linoleic, and 1 - 2 % alpha-linolenic acid.  In soaps these fatty acids contribute to a hard bar with superior conditioning properties.

Our Emu oil undergoes an all-natural refining process without the use of harsh chemicals. The process uses clay adsorbents to remove color and odor.  During the processing procedure the oil passes through six separate filtrations that removes proteins and cleans the oil. The finish product is a pure sterile oil.  It has a smooth, creamy texture ranging from white to straw yellow.  The oil is completely odorless.

The refining lab which produces our oil has been approved by American Oil Chemists Society.  The oil meets and exceeds all the standards of the American Emu Association Oil Standards Team.

Evening Primrose Oil
(
Oenothers bennis) Evening primrose oil is taken from the seeds of the evening primrose. The name comes from the fact that its flowers blossom in the evening and wither in the day. Evening primrose oil has high gamma linoleic acid, which is an essential polyunsaturated fatty acid that is converted into prostaglandins and hormones. Because evening primrose oil has an extremely high gamma linolenic acid (GLA) content it has been extensively researched. GLA is vital for the synthesis of prostaglandin an important function in the body, especially the skin. Linoleic acid is said to rejuvenate skin cells. It is full of vitamins and minerals. It repairs damaged skin, keeps skin healthy, helps repair sun damaged and mature skin. Evening primrose oil is an emollient. Organic Jojoba Oil
(
Simmondsia chinensis) Jojoba oil is cold pressed from the nuts of the jojoba tree. The jojoba tree is cultivated in California, Arizona, Mexico and Israel. Jojoba is pronounced Ho Ho Ba. Native Americans have been using jojoba for centuries. The first record of jojoba is from 1701. Father Junipero Serrra found that Native Americans were using Jojoba to treat sores, cuts, burns, as a conditioner and for all over skin and hair treatments.

Jojoba is technically not an oil, but a liquid wax ester with a long unsaturated carbon chains. Chemically it resembles sperm whale oil or spermaceti oil. It continues to be a popular ingredient in creams. In the 1970's the United States banned all sperm whale products because they were contributing to the extinction of sperm whales. In 1977 domestic commercial jojoba oil cultivation began because it is the natural substitute for spermaceti, which in other cases has been replaced by synthetic products.  It resembles human sebum; the natural coating our body produces to protect the skin and keeps it supple. Jojoba is skin therapy; our skin loses sebum with age, sun, wind, cold, and the environment. Jojoba oil contains protein, minerals and a waxy substance that mimics collagen. Jojoba is perfect for any skin type. Jojoba can help dry or oily skin. If your skin has an over production of sebum jojoba oil will dissolve clogged pores and restore the skin to its natural pH balance. The reason jojoba oil works so well it actually penetrates the skin because it is accepted as sebum. Jojoba is a good option for most people prone to acne because it is thought to have antibacterial properties and contains long chain wax esters that closely resembles skin sebum.

Jojoba has a very long shelf life, so it's a good choice if you don't use it regularly.

It is very well-absorbed, which makes it a favorite carrier oil for aromatherapy. Jojoba is usually not irritating to skin.

Although jojoba oil is very expensive it does have a long shelf life; it will never break down or go rancid. Jojoba is expensive because it can take up to 1200 nuts to get one pound of jojoba nuts, which have a 50% yield of oil.  Jojoba is not greasy and absorbs right into the skin. JMC Technologies has conducted scientific research proving that jojoba can increase skin softness by up to 37%, it reduces superficial lines and wrinkles up to 25% upon application and up to 11% after 8 hours. Jojoba oil is hypoallergenic and pure.

Deep red-orange in hue and possessing a pleasing earthy aroma, Meadowfoam CP is recommended for skin, hair and sun care products demanding the utmost performance from a natural emollient.  When added to cosmetics and creams, it re-moisturizes the skin in ways no oil can. In shampoos and soaps it helps add shine moisture to hair and scalp made dry and brittle by the harsh process of daily washing. In lipsticks and balms, it helps revitalize dry, cracked lips and they stay moist longer. Meadowfoam Seed is currently being used in the following types of products: suntan lotions, eye shadows, eye liners, mascara, hand/face creams, cuticle repair lotions, body oils and creams, shaving creams, foundations, rouges, face powders, lip sticks, shampoos, and hair/scalp treatments.

Neem Oil:
(Azadriachta indica) Used widely in India as an antibacterial, antiviral. antifungal, antiseptic, antiparasitic agent in toiletries, soap, toothpaste and skin/hair care products. It is used to treat skin disorders such as eczema, psoriasis, ringworm, scabies, syphilitic sores, chicken pox etc. It can be used to get rid of lice and control dandruff. In toothpaste in helps relieve swollen and bleeding gums and kills the bacteria that cause gingivitis. Neem powder can be used in a foot bath powder to kill fungus and bacteria. Mixed with clay, it makes a great facial for those with acne and other skin problems. Add to liquid soap base for an anti bacterial hand soap. Use in bug repellant lotion bars to keep the bugs away. Use in pet soaps to kill and repel fleas and to treat hot spots. Neem oil can be sprayed on plants to keep insects from devouring the leaves.

The neem seed kernel is very rich in fatty acids such as oleic, stearic, palmitic, linoleic and various others.  The oil is very bitter, dark in color and has a strong garlicky smell.  Neem oil is an excellent moisturizing oil that has been used historically for it's proven medicinal properties.  Today scientific research validates the traditional uses of neem in general body and specifically skin care, to treat bacterial, fungal, and viral infections, and to boost the immune system and for a variety of health problems. The use of the oil for cosmetics and medicines has been limited by its strongly bitter taste and strong odor however, when it is used in soap, the odor fades and can be further masked with the use of essential or fragrance oils. Anecdotal reports of neem date back to the Middle Ages, and accounts of its successful use in treating skin lesions and a variety of ailments come from around the world. On the Indian subcontinent, where the neem tree is known as the "village pharmacy," researchers have found more than 60 medicinal uses.  Today, neem oil is becoming popular outside of India because it has proven itself to be a safe alternative to stronger, less benign treatments.  It can be used to treat acne, eczema, psoriasis, other skin lesions, dandruff, lice, chicken pox, diaper rash, insect bites, hot spots in animals etc.  The neem oil that we use is a wildcrafted, unrefined neem oil and is of superior quality.

Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil
(Olea europaea) Olive oil is obtained by crushing and pressing the fruit of the olive tree. The olive tree is native to the Mediterranean area, but can be grown in other tropical and warm areas. The olive tree is an evergreen and an important historic oil used extensively in ancient times. Pomegranate Seed Oil:
Pomegranate seed oil just may be the answer to skin care especially if you are concerned about the effects of aging and skin cancer. High in conjugated fatty acids, a study has shown pomegranate seed oil to have beneficial effects on reducing mouse skin cancer cells. The oil is also high in anti-oxidants, anti-microbial and moisturizing. Other preliminary studies are focusing on its effects on breast, prostate and colon cancer, and cholesterol.  Dull, lifeless, rough skin is revitalized with this moisture-rich, nourishing oil.  This unique face oil turns back time. Pomegranate oil moisturizes and nourishes skin, restores proper pH balance, fights damage-causing free radicals and leaves skin super soft and smooth. Pomegranate Oil exhibits substantially more antioxidant activity then comparable quantities of green tea, red wine and other antioxidant rich botanicals making this oil a must have for the concerned about aging crowd.  No other plant contains trienoic conjugated fatty acid - an important anti-inflammatory agent and powerful free radical scavenger. Pomegranate oil also contains anthocyanidins, diverse bio-flavonoids and Vitamin C extracts which have been shown to be bactericidal and antiviral.  Send us an email if you'd like the research links for this ingredient.

Pomegranates contain flavonoids that are much more concentrated than those found in grapes.

Pomegranate fruits have also appeared throughout history as symbols of royalty, hope, and abundance. Pomegranate Seed Oil is a blend of natural, cold-pressed seed oil.

Pomegranate seed oils contain over 60% punicic acid. The Pomegrante Seed Oil is effective in cosmetic applications. The pomegranate cold pressed seed oil shows strong antioxidant activity. The anti-cancer potential of the fruit may also have something to do with the presence of flavonoid compounds in pomegranate juice.

An Israeli team has found that the fruit could have important implications for breast cancer treatment and estrogen replacement therapy.  The Technion-Israel Institute of Technology research team presented two studies at an international conference indicating that pomegranate seed oil triggers apoptosis, which is a self-destruct mechanism in breast cancer cells. Furthermore, pomegranate juice can be toxic to most estrogen-dependent breast cancer cells, while leaving normal breast cells largely unaffected. Estrogen is a hormone often prescribed to protect postmenopausal women against heart disease and osteoporosis.

In the first study, laboratory-grown breast cancer cells were treated for three days with pomegranate seed oil. The researchers observed apoptosis in 37 to 56 percent of the cancer cells, depending upon the dose of oil applied.

In the second study, both normal and cancerous breast cells were exposed to fermented pomegranate juice (pomegranate wine) and pomegranate peel extracts, which contain polyphenols (powerful antioxidants). The vast majority of the normal cells remained unaffected by the two pomegranate derivatives. But more than 75 percent of the estrogen-dependent cancer cells, and approximately half of the non-estrogen dependent cancer cells were destroyed by exposure to these same pomegranate products.

"Pomegranates are unique in that the hormonal combinations inherent in the fruit seem to be helpful both for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer," explains Dr. Ephraim Lansky, who headed the studies. "Pomegranates seem to replace needed estrogen often prescribed to protect postmenopausal women against heart disease and osteoporosis, while selectively destroying estrogen-dependent cancer cells."

Dr. Martin Goldman, a New York-based board certified internist and life medicine specialist, notes, "This is apparently a safe substance that could be helpful to many people, especially women at high-risk for developing breast cancer."

Dr. Lajos Pusztai, an assistant professor who studies breast cancer at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston , Texas , says Dr. Lansky's study "provides a potential new avenue to develop anti-cancer drugs from a natural compound."

HERBAL EXTRACTS AND INFUSIONS

Black Willow Bark Extract (Organic):
The Black Willow (Salix nigra) tree, found in the eastern part of the North American continent, is famous for its dark brown, ridged bark. The fresh bark is rich in tannins and salicylic acid-like materials. The freshly prepared extract has been reported to have analgesic, antiseptic, astringent, anti-pyretic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Natural Black Willowbark Extract has been shown to possess potent antimicrobial properties. Efficacy testing has shown that the extract has activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Propionibacterium acnes, two of the skin flora implicated in the formation of acne. When added to cosmetic formulations, the extract can also increase the cell renewal capabilities of cosmetic formulations. Natural Black Willowbark Extract is a safe way to get the benefits of a B-hydroxy acid without the risk of irritation. When compared to Salicylic Acid the extract is better able to increase turnover of the stratum corneum and also has more in vitro antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Propionibacterium acnes. Coupled with this increased efficacy, it has less irritation potential than salicylic acid comparable to glycerin.

Chamomile (Organic)
Chamomile flowers - a member of the daisy family.  Used to treat dermatitis, minor skin irritations, and inhibits inflammation.  In one study it was found that chamomile was 60% as active as a topical corticosteroid cream.  In another study using patients with atopic dermatitis, it was found to be nearly as effective as hydrocortisone.  German herbalists called it alles zutraut which means "capable of anything".

Comfrey Root (Organic)
Comfrey Root (Symphytum officinale) One of the most useful and valuable plants in cosmetics and medicine. The Physician's Desk Reference (1970 p. 956) states that "allantoin (comfrey's active ingredient) has been reported to liquefy pus and necrotic protein thus accelerating debridement of lesions and denuded areas." It is said to regenerate aging tissues.

Green Tea Extract (Organic)
(Camellia sinensis) From the leaves of the plants dried, cured and extracted into ethyl alcohol. Used in cosmetics to reduce the puffiness around the eyes. Has astringent properties due to tannic acid content. Green tea contains compounds that have an antioxidant effect. It is thought that it has anticancerous effects which have been determined by test tube but not proven in human disease prevention yet. It is thought that the active antioxidants may be able to inhibit the cancer process initiated by the sun's ultraviolet B radiation. AT Case Western Reserve University topical administration of green tea resulted in a reduction of tumors that occurred following UVB radiation.

Kelp Norway Extract
(Asco phyllium nodosom) When added to the bath it smoothes the skin. The Indians of Sitka, Alaska use it to treat earaches and poultices for bruises and cuts. Seaweed was the original source of iodine.

Pomegranate oil also contains anthocyanidins, diverse bio-flavonoids and Vitamin C extracts which have been shown to be bactericidal and antiviral.  Send us an email if you'd like the research links for this ingredient.

Natural Source Ingredients

Alpha Lipoic Acid::
If you haven’t read Dr. Nicholas Perricone’s #1 New York Times Best Seller, The Wrinkle Cure, Unlock the Power of Cosmeceuticals for Supple, Youthful Skin it is time to go pick up a copy.  According to Dr. Perricone products containing DMAE (see more about DMAE below), Alpha Lipoic Acid, Vitamin C Ester, Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Vitamin E and Retinol Vitamin A can create amazing results in the appearance of aging skin.  According to research done by Dr. Perricone and others, DMAE is found in foods and can create an almost immediate appearance in the firming and tone of the skin. Vitamin C Ester is well known and long documented antioxidant that protects the surface of the skin from free radicals that can damage the skin. Alpha Lipoic Acid is the most powerful of antioxidants. It is able to benefit both the water and lipid portions of the skin. It is said to give the skin a “youthful and glowing appearance.” Retinol Palmitate (Vitamin A) nourishes the skin and assists in the “rejuvenation process that maintains a more youthful appearance.” Alpha Hydroxy Acids gently remove dead skin and provide an added antioxidant. In our formula we use the gentle and natural form of AHA’s that occur in natural fruit extracts. All of these ingredients work as a synergetic blend to create an effective and wonderful serum.

We have also added the benefits of Beta Carotene, CoQ10, Lecithin, Meadowfoam Seed Oil and Tocopherol (Vitamin E) to create a superior product line. Beta Carotene, also known as Pro-Vitamin A is found in plants and many animal tissues. It is a precursor to Vitamin A. Coenzyme Q10, also known as ubiquinone, is a vitamin-like substance acting similar to Vitamin E. However, research shows it is a more powerful antioxidant. CoQ10 is critical to the production of energy in every cell of the body. It aids in circulation, stimulates the immune system, increases tissue oxygenation, and has vital anti-aging effects. Coenzyme Q10 has exceptional antioxidant properties. Studies show that it can effectively counteract free radical damage and provide significant protection against UVA-induced depletion of cell membrane. In other words, it will prevent damage to collagen and elastin production process and help you avoid wrinkles. No cream that purports to have a biologically significant amount of Alpha Lipoic Acid and CoQ10 can be any other color than yellow to peach. Visit the cosmetic counter anywhere and examine our all the competitor's so called "CoQ10 or ALA Creams." They will appear white, no hint of peach or yellow at all. This is your signal they contain insignificant and ineffective amounts of CoQ10 or ALA.

Our facial serums can be used on the neck, face and around the lips and eyes. They can be applied in the morning as a step just prior to applying makeup. They can be used at night alone or just prior to using a moisturizer.

Ascorbyl Palmitate - (Palmitic acid ester - Vitamin C Ester) A salt of ascorbic acid. It is used as a preservative and antioxidant to prevent rancidity. Vitamin C is thought to prevent collagen break down and help combat the signs of aging. As an antioxidant it is believed to remove the free radicals that cells produce. Free radicals have been associated with skin cancer and premature skin aging due to sun exposure. Some experts believe antioxidants are the most vital weapons in the fight against aging. Most of the damage of our skin is caused by a free-radical assault from smoke, pollution and UV rays. Free radicals then turn the oils of our skin rancid, which damages the collagen. Collagen is the protein fibers that serve as the building blocks of our skin. Antioxidants are used in skin care products to neutralize free radicals before they ravage the skin. Topical vitamin C may help lighten solar lentigos and melasma. Some studies have shown that topical vitamin C provides additional protection against the harmful effects of the sun. Said to prevent collagen breakdown, which would aid in combating aging. Duke University found that adding Vitamin C and E to sunscreens protects against UVB radiation.

DMAE:

DMAE is an amazing nutrient that extends the life of cells, inhibits the cross linking of proteins, which gives the skin a tone and firm appearance. This serum is very light and can be put on over or under the makeup. The firm appearance that DMAE can bring to the skin occurs within about 20 minutes and wears off by the end of the day. DMAE has become very popular as a result of Dr. Nicholas Perricone, M.D.'s top-selling book, The Wrinkle Cure, in which he promotes supplementing with DMAE as a treatment for reducing wrinkles. When applied to the skin DMAE would stimulate acetylcholine release which would trigger a response in the muscles of the face. This activity creates a firmer facial tone and less sagging.

DMAE is one of the few nutrients that research studies have shown to extend the life of cells, but DMAE levels decrease dramatically with age. DMAE stabilizes the cell's membrane and boosts the effects of other antioxidants. However, the main reason for adding DMAE to the Wrinkle Serum is due to its high level of acetylcholine, necessary for skin tone and firmness. When DMAE is applied topically it begins to work quickly (within minutes of application) and continues to firm and tone the skin over time.

Further information: dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE) seems to improve the firmness of the skin and to help reduce the visual appearance of sagging skin (cutis laxa). DMAE is an amine-based alcohol, a precursor to the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, DMAE is present in nerve tissue in small amounts and more abundant in fish. DMAE would act as a free radical scavenger due to the high electron content of its nitrogen atom. Once phosphorylated, DMAE is incorporated into the membrane of cells, protecting against the cell membrane protein cross-linking. In addition, DMAE is an immediate precursor to choline, which is involved in cell membrane biosynthesis. % DMAE facial gel applied daily for 16 weeks has been shown to be safe and efficacious in mitigating forehead lines and periorbital fine wrinkles, and in improving lip shape and fullness and the overall appearance of aging skin.

Emulsifying Wax NF
Plant based, used to create a bond between water and oil. A critical ingredient in lotions and cream since there is no other natural product that can create a smooth texture. An emulsifier is a chemical compound that joins oil and water and forms a stable mixture called an emulsion. The molecular structure of an emulsifier molecule is able to attract both a water and an oil molecule at different sites at the same time. Emulsifiers manufactured from plant fats have one or two fatty acids removed leaving one or two hydrophilic sites vacant on the glycerin molecule. The vacant locations on the glycerin molecule have a high affinity to water while the remaining fatty acid tails attract oily compounds. An emulsifier molecules act as intermediary to bind water and oil. The resulting compounds are called monogycerides and diglycerides which represent an important class of natural emulsifiers.

 Magnesium Sulfate USP
(Epsom Salts) A soaking aid for minor sprains, muscle aches and bruises. A water softener and bath additive.

MSM:
MSM, Methylsulfonylmethane, is a naturally occurring nutrient found in plants, meats, dairy products, fruits, and vegetables. MSM is therefore found in the normal human diet. It is an odorless, tasteless, white water soluble, crystalline solid in its purified form. MSM supplies sulfur to the body which allows it to heal itself. It produces muscle relaxation and reportedly a whole host of beneficial qualities. It has been used with great success in eliminating chronic pain, muscle pain, repairing cut, scraped, burned and damage skin. We've seen reports of MSM eliminating wrinkles, brown spots, skin tumors, and spider veins. MSM is being used for burn victims and repairing scar tissue. Many people report relief from allergies after using MSM. Other reports indicate that MSM will remove parasites from the body, and help the body to detoxify itself.  MSM is anti-inflamatory and anti-microbial. MSM feeds the formation of collagen and elastin while preventing and reducing cross-linking between cells, which is the primary cause of wrinkles and scar tissue. MSM is a natural sulfur compound that contributes to healthy skin, hair and nails. MSM has been used orally and topically to aid skin disorders. When used topically, in the form of a cream or lotion, sulfur is helpful in treating skin disorders including acne, psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis, dandruff, scabies, diaper rash and certain fungal infections.

Propylene Glycol
Often derived from vegetable glycerin or seaweed. The most common moisture carrying ingredient other than water used in cosmetics because it moisturizes better than glycerin. Is used as a wetting agent and surfactant which gives a product better absorption and promotes spreading of the product on the skin. Propylene Glycol is an emollient. Not to be confused with Ethyl Glycol which is used in anti-freeze and other chemical based products. It can penetrate the outermost layer of the skin cells and carry other beneficial products deeper into the epidermis. According to the AMA's committee on Cutaneous Health emollients do help make the skin feel softer and smoother, reduce roughness, cracking and irritation. And may possibly retard the fine wrinkles of aging.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, within the Public Health Services for Toxin Substances and Disease Registry have conducted studies and have shown that propylene glycol is a completely safe product in cosmetics.
