An essential oil that is steam distilled from the berries that turn from red to black as they mature. Not to be confused with cayenne pepper or paprika, black and white pepper have been used for over 4,000 years for medicinal and culinary purposes. In Greece, it is reported, the plant was used against intermittent fever, which was believed to probably have been malaria. In several different sources, there is the story that the mendicant (refers to begging or dependent upon charitable donations) monks of India would travel great distances daily and relied on approximately 7 to 9 grains of pepper a day to give them “remarkable endurance”. Black pepper essential oil is also used in perfumery to acquire different and unique fragrances. As always we cannot confuse the spice with the essential oil, but felt the history was interesting.

Safety/Cautions: The literature shows black pepper essential oil to be non-toxic and generally non-sensitizing, but could be a skin irritant in high concentrations due to its ability to increase blood circulation to the skin. We've found this property to be of special benefit for inclusion in our Spicey Muscle Oil. Black pepper is one of those that we definitely keep refrigerated as it can easily oxidize, which increases the potential for skin irritation as well as general degradation of the oil.

Considered safe for pregnancy and lactating and safe to use topically (in the proper dilutions) and diffusing around children.

IMPORTANT: All of our products are for external use only.

Should not be used internally unless you have a good working knowledge of the use of essential oils or consult with an aromatherapy or medical professional prior to use. In addition, Essential Oils must be properly diluted before use in order to avoid any damages to property or adverse physical effects (including injury or bodily harm).
