This is the same custom blend that we use in our very popular Spicey Muscle Oil Rub. I developed this blend after long hours of researching and reading various aromatherapy texts and they all unanimously agree that each of these oils is considered to be analgesic for rheumatic pain,  antispasmodic, effective for muscle, bone and nerve pain, as well as being significantly anti-inflammatory as outlined below:

 DESCRIPTION:

Black Pepper - Shirley Price says it is analgesic for rheumatic pain and relieves aches and pains. Battaglia says that it is analgesic and antispasmodic. He also says that the warming and penetrating odor is very stimulating and strengthens the nervous system. Used for stimulating the mental faculties and energizing the body. He further says that black pepper's rubifacient and analgesic properties make it useful for muscular aches and pain, tired and aching limbs and muscle stiffness. Also useful as a massage oil for arthritic aches and pains. Sibley tells us that it aids circulation and has cleansing properties that give tone to skeletal muscles, making it useful for muscular aches and pains, tired and aching limbs and muscular stiffness.

Ginger Root: Shirley Price says that ginger essential oil is helpful for localized pain, analgesic for rheumatism and a potent anti-inflammatory oil. Gabriel Mojay in his classic book, "Aromatherapy for Healing the Spirit", tells us that if yang energy is deficient, one is likely to feel chilly, tired, and unmotivated and will benefit from warming, invigorating essential oils such as rosemary and ginger. He further says that there are oils that promote the circulation of blood, stimulate digestive "fire" and counteract rheumatic pain of a cold, fixed, contracted nature. Ginger essential oil is a "powerful rubefacient for rheumatic pain" and "helpful also for relieving lower backache, mainly when associated with muscular fatigue." Battaglia says it is analgesic, antispasmodic and rubefacient. "A massage blend with ginger makes an effective warming massage oil for swellings caused by fluid retention or for rheumatism." He also considers it helpful for clearing bruises. He tells us that studies confirm the anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties of ginger in rheumatic disorders and migraine headaches.

Nutmeg: Price says this essential oil is helpful for severe pain in arthritis, stress-relieving, analgesic for aches, pains, rheumatism, sprains, and neuralgia, as well as a circulatory stimulant. Battaglia agrees stating that nutmeg essential oil is analgesic, anti-rheumatic, antispasmodic, a prostaglandin inhibitor, stimulant and tonic. "It is an excellent essential oil to add to massage oil because of its warming property for muscular aches and pains as well as rheumatism.

Plai: Price says that plai essential oil is useful for arthritis, it is anti-inflammatory and that plai, nutmeg and lemon reduced joint pain more than a year after a knee operation.

Turmeric: Robert Tisserand says that this essential oil has shown significant antioxidant and DPPH radical scavenging activity. He further says that turmeric essential oil counteracted oxidative stress in rats, "reducing ROS in brain tissue." He further tells us that this oil is "markedly antimutagenic". An important note for those of us who know many benefits of "curcumin" which comes from the dried root of turmeric, it is also present in the oleoresin and CO2 exract, but has NOT been reported in the essential oil. Turmeric essential oil is not discussed at all in the older aromatherapy texts, but there are many, many research papers that have been done showing its many benefits.

Clove Bud: Sibley says that it has pain relieving properties affecting the nerve end pathways. Price says it is effective for arthritis and has a "strong effect for severe pain". Battaglia says it is analgesic, antispasmodic as well as having a positive and stimulating effect on the mind, "lifts depression and is recommended as an inhalation when feeling weak and lethargic". He also tells us the clove bud essential oil is beneficial for "treating inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions. Sibley informs us that clove essential oil has "pain-relieving properties affecting the nerve end pathways that can help with localized pain."

INGREDIENTS:

Pure, unadulterated, undiluted professionally customized blend of essential oils of organic wild-crafted Allspice (Pimenta officinalis), Fresh Ginger Root (Zingiber officinale), wild-crafted Plai (Zingiber cassumunar) , organic Turmeric (Curcuma longa), wild-crafted Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans), wild-crafted Black Pepper (Piper nigrum), and wild-crafted Clove Bud (Syzygium aromaticum).

SAFETY/USAGE:
Robert Tisserand in his 2nd edition of "Essential Oil Safety" was our main source for safety and/or cautions:

Black pepper: He says that black pepper can cause skin sensitization only if oxidized and recommends not using those oils and keep black pepper in a refrigerator (which, of course, we do).

Bay Rum: He also tells us that for West Indies Bay Rum essential oil there could potentially be drug interactions and also may inhibit blood clotting due to levels of eugenol.

Ginger Root: Tisserand tells us that Ginger Root is not commonly adulterated and the undiluted oil was moderately irritating to rabbits but not to mice at 4% dilution - which is much higher than what is present in this blend. He also says that ginger essential oil has moderate antioxidant activity and also has anticarcinogenic activity.

Nutmeg: For information concerning nutmeg, Tisserand and Young (as did Battaglia) tells us that there are two different chemotypes with "important differences". There is an East Inidan and a West Indian chemotype. For more information concerning this, please see our detailed profile of nutmeg essential oil here. Depending on safrole and methyl-eugenol content there are no known contraindications for this oil or contraindications in pregnancy. Nutmeg has "demonstrated significant antioxidant activity in vitro and in vivo. It contains both potential carcinogens but also anti-carcinogens which are present at a "higher concentration".

Plai: As far as Plai essential oil is concerned, Tisserand says that it "demonstrated significant chemoprotective activity against human mouth epidermal carcinoma and mouse leukemia cell lines.

Turmeric: Tisserand indicates drug interaction cautions in oral doses for diabetes, it can be slightly irritating to rat skin but not mice and not on human volunteers even at 4%, again which is significantly higher than the percentage present in this blend.

Clove Bud: Potential drug interactions, inhibits blood clotting so do not use if already using a blood thinner,  embryotoxicity, skin sensitization (moderate risk). If applied dermally, there may be hypersensitivity to diseased or damaged skin. Do not use on children under 2 years of age. DO NOT TAKE THIS ORALLY.
