Cinnamon leaf is quite high in the chemical constituent Eugenol (approximately 75% depending on sample), which contributes to some of the following properties that have been documented through extensive research and current literature. We will be offering Cinnamon Bark very soon as it has a completely different mix of chemical constituents and is very high in the component cinnamaldehyde, but should be used with the greatest caution and with adequate aromatherapy education.

  • Analgesic, including nerve pain
  • Broad spectrum and powerful antibacterial
  • Antitumoral
  • Anticoagulant (do not use prior to surgery or in conjunction with other blood thinners)
  • Antihistaminic
  • Relieves insect bites
  • Relieves migraines
  • Powerful antioxidant
  • Antifungal, inhibits Candida specifically
  • Very good for disinfecting air quality
  • Toothache, widely used by dentistry for its analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties
  • Excellent in blends for colds, flu, and cough
  • Insecticide
  • Must be used highly diluted - test before putting on skin or mucous membranes - Robert Tisserand's latest edition of "Essential Oil Safety" recommends a "maximum dermal use level" of 0.6%

Additional and more in-depth information can be considered in the tabs below and in our Essential Oil Database (currently in construction, but growing rapidly!)

Cinnamon Leaf Essential Oil

Due to the high levels of the chemical constituent Eugenol, cinnamon leaf essential oil should not be used by anyone who is currently on blood thinning medications, including over-the-counter or supplements such as Nattokinase. It also should not be used prior to surgery or following surgery - just as your doctor will tell you to stop taking your aspirin. This oil is also a strong skin irritant, meaning that it should never be put directly on the skin unless properly diluted.

Although Cinnamon BARK is often discussed at the same time as cinnamon leaf, they are two distinctly different oils with different component profiles. Safety information is also different - both, of which - however, do require cautions for topical application with cinnamon bark being with much higher issues of possible skin irritation. Cinnamon Bark is contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation but Robert Tisserand's EOS does not include cinnamon leaf in his chart of essential oils to be avoided by any route throughout pregnancy and lactation. Since this oil is a particularly powerful antimicrobial, I believe the perceived risk (which I can't find) versus benefit would not preclude using this essential oil during pregnancy or lactation - preferably by diffusion.

I would reiterate, however, that oral doses are not recommended. All of the information you see about the high antioxidant capacity of oral use of Clove Oil (another essential oil high in eugenol) are not supported by research or even common sense. Use a tea with the whole plant herb - such as Yogi's Classic India Spice Tea, which is my favorite for fending off any type of cold or flu. This has worked so many times over so many years that neither me nor any of my family are ever without a supply of Classic India Spice Tea and a good source of organic raw honey. However, please note that the tea has to be steeped for at least 20 minutes and until the temperature of the tea is not so hot as to eliminate the beneficial properties of the raw honey - somewhere around 105 degrees.
